Fluorescent Magnetic – T12 Ballasts – T8 Ballasts Bradenton Clearwater Sarasota Ft Myers Tampa

Why can’t I find standard Magnetic T12 Fluorescent Ballasts anymore?

The standard magnetic T12 fluorescent ballasts that have been the workhorse of the commercial lighting market for the past 60 years were phased out on July 1, 2010 due to the EPACT legislation.

While remaining inventories of these magnetic ballasts that operate (2) 4 foot or 8 foot T12 fluorescent linear tubes can be installed and sold off until inventories are depleted, most distributors by now have sold most of their existing inventory.  End users that are still using the tradition size fluorescent lamps, are now faced with the reality of how to repair their light fixtures. End users now have three options for dealing with their fixture problem.

Frontier Lighting can help!

    1)  If you are satisfied with the overall performance of the T12 fluorescent bulbs that you are currently using,  Frontier Lighting has an electronic ballast  in stock that will operate the older style T12 lamps in either 4 foot or 8 foot. The wiring for a two light fixtures would be the same as the magentic version, for a one light setup, two of the wire leads would need to be capped off.

   2)  Convert the magnetic ballast to an electronic ballast that will operate up to ( 4)  T8 fluorescent lamps. This style  of fluorescent ballast would require changing your fluorescent lamps to a more energy efficient T8 fluorescent  lamp (light bulb), the fixture and the fixture sockets can be reused,  the wiring however, may need to be modified depending on the electronic ballast. Frontier Lighting has ballasts available that would wire the same as the magnetic ballasts using 2 blue wires 2 red wires 2 yellow wires 1 black and 1 white wire. The new ballasts should be re-wired to the exact wiring diagram on the label of the ballast. We stock both the T12 and  T8 fluorescent electronic fluorescent ballasts and lamps,  and would be glad to provide you with any information you would need.

3)  Replace the complete light fixture with a new fluorescent light fixture that contains an electronic fluorescent ballast that operates T8 fluorescent lamps. Since new fixtures have only been available with electronic ballasts that operate T8 bulbs for some time now, you would also need to replace your bulbs when you convert to this new style of light fixture. Frontier Lighting’s Florida lighting stores are fully stocked with the fixtures, ballasts, and bulbs to make your job easier and save you money.

4) Convert the existing light fixture to accept T8 LED lamps. These T8 LED lamps are a new technology for general lighting applications, and wide scale ”field installed” long term reliabilty and/or lumen longevity is still unknown. Prices on the LED T8  is also a concern, with a poor return on investment when compared to exsisting proven and reliable fluorescent technologies. A conservative installation approach should be used with any of the T8 LED fluorescent replacement lamps. These lamps generally also require a fixture re-wire, powering the fluorescent sockets ends with 120 volts.

Call Frontier Lighting for information about fluorescent magnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts, or LED T8 replacements,  or any other lighting needs, our experienced sales staff are ready to assist you with all your lighting needs.

  1. I searched for something completely different, but found your website! And have to say thanks. The information about the obsolete magnetic ballasts being replaced with newer electronic fluorescent ballasts is very helpfull. They seem to do the same thing and I can use the same bulbs

  2. Thank You for educating me on these Keystone ballasts. I have had a hard time finding the magnetic ones recently. It is nice to know that I can still use my same bulbs with the newer electronic ballasts.
