Points of Interest in Polk County Florida:

Lakeland, the largest city in Polk County, founded by Abraham Munn and incorporated on January 1, 1885. In that same year the Tremont Hotel, was built, said to have been the best hotel in South Florida. The hotel was moved in 1923 to make way for the construction of another hotel; Terrace Hotel, which still stands today. A rival town on the south side of Lake Parker named Acton had a church before Lakeland did, but more importantly it had the local Railroad depot. A mysterious fire burned down the Acton Railway depot and shortly thereafter a larger, more modern depot was built in Lakeland causing the ultimate demise of the city of Acton, Florida. The Lakeland Light and Power Company erected a light plant in 1891. In May of that year, the plant manager threw the switch and Lakeland was lighted by electric lights for the first time. Lakeland, Tampa and Jacksonville were the only three towns in Florida at that time to have electric lights. Lakeland is home to several buildings on the national register of Historic places. The list includes the Terrace Hotel, New Florida Hotel (Regency Towers), Polk Theatre, Park Trammel Building (formerly Lakeland Public Library and today the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce building) and others. Polk County was where thousand of men were trained to fly for the US Army Air Corp and also a training area for B24 bomber pilots. Lakeland is headquarters for the Publix Supermarket Chain, Discount Auto Parts Stores and Breed Technologies in addition to many others. The players of the Detroit Tigers baseball team have been enjoying the mild Florida winters in Lakeland ever since holding their first spring training here in 1934.
