Points of interest in Hillsborough County:

Hillsborough County was established as Florida’s 19th county in 1834, being created from parts of Alachua County and Monroe County. The Tampa Bay area began to develop after the territory became a part of the United States of America in 1845. Vicente Martinez Ybor opened the first cigar factory in 1886 on the outskirts of Tampa, starting a trend for other cigar manufacturers that eventually earned Tampa the nickname the “Cigar City” and the cigar manufacturing area as Ybor City. Tampa has evolved into a diverse, multi-cultural center of business, full of hotels, office buildings, schools and universities, restaurants, retail shops, hair salons, book stores, florists, banks, and brokerage offices. Tampa’s shipping port near the Waterside area is now the seventh largest in the nation. Tampa University is a world renowned school, with a unique campus. The school’s main academic and administrative building, Plant Hall, is located in the former Tampa Bay Hotel; built between 1888 through 1891. One of eight hotels built by railroad magnate Henry B Plant. The hotel rooms were the first in Florida to have electric lights and telephones. The 511 room hotel was originally designed as a premier winter resort in the southeastern United States for tourist looking to escape to the warm balmy weather of the Tampa Bay area. Another of Plant’s hotels across Tampa Bay in Belleair, Florida just south of Clearwater, Florida is the 820,000 square foot Belleview Biltmore Hotel, built in 1897, and is said to be the largest occupied wooden structure in the world. Plant City a community of 26 square miles, located between Tampa and Lakeland, was renamed in 1885 in honor of the famous railway magnate after he extended the railway through their town. Around the same time, a succulent red fruit was introduced to the region. Those succulent red berries, Strawberries, continued to be developed in the area and Plant City eventually became know as the strawberry capitol of the world. The Florida Strawberry festival in Plant City ranks among the top 30 festivals in the nation. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team, the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and the Tampa Bay Lighting hockey team are the favorites in this area.
