Museums are warned to reconsider the use of LED Lighting

    Museums should proceed with caution when using LED lighting near paintings to prevent certain colors from further fading away. Recent testing shows that some of the  key works tested began changing bright-yellow color due to exposure to energy efficient LED lighting installed in museums worldwide. Samples of 14 works dated from 1887 and 1890 were tested for the reaction which affects an oil painting color that is know as Chrome-Yellow. According to the experts the bright-yellow pigment becomes unstable under LED lighting and over time turns a shade of brownish green. Scientists in Europe reportedly using x-ray technology analyzed the bright-yellow tones in key works from Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gaugin. They are asking museums to reconsider the use of LED lighting.

     LED lighting, so far on the surface, seems to be an energy efficient replacement for some traditional lighting , but since LED light bulbs and LED Lighting have only been in limited use in general lighting for 2 years or so, there is no collection of historical data on the long term performance, environment, health, or other affects (if any)  from the use of LED bulbs and LED lighting. Lighting applications or installation areas in the future may ultimately be deemed unsuitable for the use of LED lighting if specific negative impacts are discovered as the use of LED lighting in general lighting areas increases.

 Q: Can I replace all my standard incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs with LED bulbs?

 A: LED bulbs are now being manufactured in more shapes, sizes and wattages, some of these LED light bulbs do a great job at replacing the comparable halogen or incandescent bulb they are designed to replace, however, some types of lighting, especially linear fluorescent bulbs are already very efficient and are proven in the field to have a very long life (rated up to 62,000 hours) , so LED’s are not a good option when looking at those areas to convert. So the bottom line is that each lighting application needs to be analyzed separately to see what bulbs are currently being used and what LED product would replace that bulb, compare the wattage saved (if any) by switching to LED, figure the difference in lamp life, and add the savings of labor to replacement the current bulbs, then calculate the return on investment to see if it make sense to replace the bulbs. A worthwhile Return on Investment would be a business decision based on a financial returns , labor savings or other environmental considerations. Since LED’s are an emerging technologies the prices will most likely decline in the future and the effeciency and quality of LED bulbs will most likely go up  in the future, so you more than likely will be able to purchase a better quality bulbs in near future for less money.     

Q: What makes an LED bulb different than a standard incandescent light bulb?

 A:  An LED is a light emitting diode. This light emitting diode is mounted on a circuit board with some other electronics circuitry and when the power is turned on the diode emmits lights. The LED lights that are currently available generally contain one or more solid state circuit boards placed into a “circuit board holder” that is shaped like a common type of light bulb. Even though the outer shell of the product can look the same, a big part of the expense of LED product is the quality and number of the LED chips and the LED drivers (or transformers) that are incorporated into the product. Some of the less expensive products may contain more “lower wattage” or less efficient LED chips or drivers, while the more expensive LED products will generally contain high quality components and better light optics than their less expense counter-parts. The selection process of purchasing the correct LED lighting is a critical step to make your conversion process to LED lighting successful.

 Q: How do I know which LED bulb to use to replace the existing lighting that I have in place now?

 A: LED light bulbs should have an area on the packaging that is referred to as “Lighting Facts”. This information describes the lumens, color temperature, color rendering, wattage and comparable incandescent wattage.  Even though this information is printed on the carton, you should test a small area of a facility for several months before making a final decision, so you can get a good idea of the light that will be produced from the products under consideration. Within this period, you should check for color shifting, loss of light output (an inherent problem with LED’s) and any early failures. Also look for products that are Energy Star Rated these items have ben subjected to extensive testing and the information on the lighting facts label have been verified.  

Q:  Why do different brands of LED bulbs have such a difference in the Average Rated Life?

 A: LED bulbs can have a wide range of “Average Rated Life” printed on the box due to many factors. Since there are limited consistent testing standards for manufacturers to follow or abide by, some manufacturers have got very creative in assigning Life Ratings to their products. Some have used the rated life of the LED chips prior to being incorporated into the final finished products (or the average rated life of a single LED chip in a laboratory setting  or under ideal conditions), others are taking a best guess approach, since some of the manufacturers have not been in business as long as the average rated life of their bulbs. The key here is to stick with Quality Lighting Brands, manufactures that have been in the lighting business for a long time, to mention a few quality product manufactures; Sylvania, Philips, and Toshiba have been in the lighting business for years and would be able to cover warranty issues if problems should arise in the future.

 Q: Why are LED bulbs more expensive than other light bulbs?

 A: The costs on LED bulbs vary depending on the quality of the LED components and LED optics. Some of the imported brands offer less efficient and lower quality models, and the major manufacturers offering an LED product with more testing and usually their products carry an Energy Star Rating. Since LED bulbs and LED lighting is still an evolving technology the prices on LED products will continue to drop and effeciencies will increase as newer more efficient configurations and designs become available and LED production volumes increase.

Q: Should I buy LED’s that have an Energy Star Rating?

 A: An Energy Star Rating is a way that you can tell that the bulbs you are purchasing have been through a consistent third party testing and that the manufacturers care about the quality and integrity of the product that they are selling in to the market. Look for the Energy Star Rating to make sure the product you are considering is worth the investment.

Q: How long should LED bulbs last?

 A: The life of LED bulbs fluctuate depending on many factors, including the quality of the LED chips, the LED driver (or transformer in the product) and the thermal management (or heat removal) of the fixture housing. Many LED bulbs have life ratings anywhere from 15,000 hours to around 50,000 hours, however there is a continual depreciation (or loss) of light output so that near the end of the rated average life, you may only be receiving 70% or less of the original stated light output. While in some areas this loss of light output may not be an issue, however, there are other areas where losing 30% or more of the original intended output could cause serious safety, security, liability and legal issues that need to be considered before installation in these sensitive areas. Make sure you are aware of how this will impact the area that you are considering retrofitting to LED .

        All of us have heard about identity theft, where a person steals the identity of another, usually for financial  gain.  Years of a persons good reputation of promptly paying bills, managing money, and trying to be an overall good American Citizen, are stolen over a short period of time. The Value of Buying from Authorized Distributors!

     Authorized distributors are wholesale distributors who have established an agreement to purchase directly from a specific lighting manufacturer. They must meet the manufacturer’s standards from sales to service in order to receive an authorized status. Most wholesale Lighting distributors are authorized through many lighting manufacturers to purchase products direct and resell them in to the local markets. The manufacturers provide specialized training and technical expertise to the staff and customers of these authorized distributors. The manufacturers also keep authorized distributors apprised of any product recalls and facilitate return of this material to the manufacturer. Authorized distributors ensure manufacturer warranties will be honored and have the flexibility to replace defective products promptly and efficiently.

     When buying from an unauthorized distributor, you are buying from a distributor who is generally buying products from national surplus or liquidation dealers. Unsuspecting end users have no way of knowing the source or integrity of these “gray market” products, and no knowledge of where these products originated, or whether or not they have a valid warranty or factory support if a problem arises after the sale. Were these products from a closeout? Were these products manufactured only for export? Have these products been recalled for a safety related issue? Counterfeit Electrical and Lighting Products?

Everyone at some time has joked about the $20.00 Rolex watches or Gucci purses, but counterfeit lighting products? Counterfeit electrical products ranked fifth on the U.S. Customs list of 2008 counterfeit seizures, with a 43%  increase  from 2007 to 2008. Counterfeit Christmas lights are just the tip of the iceberg in the fast-growing crime of counterfeit electrical products. Often carrying fake Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) labels, counterfeit holiday lights, extension cords, and multiple-outlet power strips pose a threat to consumers for their potential inability to meet electrical safety and fire codes. Counterfeit electrical lamps and ballasts may have unsafe mercury levels, inferior components or fake (UL) labels, which could cause electrical fires or health issues. A high profile counterfeit case in June 2006 was the discovery that over an 18 month period, an estimated half million or more counterfeited circuit breakers marked as a major manufactures’ breaker were shipped through these gray market channels and sold in the U.S market.  These counterfeit breakers were identical to the originals except for one thing; they lacked the proper circuit protection, making them not much more than an on/off switch. It is possible that many of these fake breakers are still installed in homes or businesses across the country, with the  occupants of these building possibly in iminent danger.  A counterfeit lighting product in the best case situation can be an inconvenience with shortened product life and money wasted, the worst case scenario can lead to fires, shocks, or explosions that can cost workers their lives and produce considerable property damage and liability exposure.

How to Protect Yourself :

 Purchasing your products from an authorized distributor of the brand you are purchasing   helps protect you from these out-sourced and potentially dangerous products. Buy products from reputable firms. Check Underwriter Laboritory’s website at  www.UL.com and the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition website at: www.IACC.org  for listings of products discovered to be counterfeit. Be wary of name brand products sold at below market prices or firms offering below market pricing.

   The location and date had been set; Clearwater, Florida August 26, 2011 at 7:30pm, just as the sun was starting to drop into the western sky. This was not just another hot summer day on Florida’s west coast. On this day, there was going to be a game to remember, regardless of who won. The uniforms helmets, and pads were all there, ready to go. Adrenline, anticipation and apprehension were high on both sides of the field as the appointed time drew near. The two teams had been training long and hard for this day, for this game, and they were ready to play.

 The Kick off  itself Marked a Memorable Milestone!

Facing off on the gridiron from Clearwater, Florida were the Calvary Christian High School Warriors and from Lakeland, Florida the Santa Fe Catholic High School’s Hawks. The kick off itself marked a memorable milestone, a memorable night at the “The Rock”, the name given to Calvary Christian High School’s new sports facility. The delightful smell of  un-healthy food wafted from the concession areas and carried through the spectator stands as parents cheered on their boys and their teams. As the hot summer day turned into a balmy Florida night, the game wore on, and after the last play of the game, and the referee’s final whistle blew, the new Daktronics JumboTron scoreboard showed that the boys from Lakeland Hawk’s had pulled off a win over their Clearwater rivals with a final score of 36 to 27, but everyone there from both sides had become a part of the historical events of that night. Calvary Christian High School’s new $4.3 million dollar recently completed sports complex facility, funded by the generousity of a single anonymous donor, was launched into service, hosting it’s first football game.  This first game kicks off what is sure to be a positive impact for thousands of  students engaged in sports events at the complex, learning  sportsmanship, to win or lose with respect and dignity.  Calvary also plans on trying to host The Special Olympic events at the facility. The near professional grade sports complex facility was completed a few weeks earlier and is the first stadium in Pinellas County to have an artificial playing surface. The Daktronics Jumbotron scoreboard at the south end of the field is capable of showing instant video replays. The sports complex, built to complement Calvary Christian High School’s academic and fine arts programs also has an eight lane rubber running track for track and field events. Calvary’s new sports  complex is also equiped with a new 9000 square foot field house. The glass enclosed weight room is equipped with Hammer Strength weight machines, a 40 person locker room and high definition televisions sets, concession areas and ticket booths. Outdoor space has also been allocated for hosting tail gate parties, along with space for live entertainment. Calvary is planning a dedication of the complex Friday October 7th 2011

On the Lighter Side of Business – A visit to Peru!

  I mostly post articles about lighting related topics; Sylvania’s latest energy saving light bulbs, high effeciency electronic ballasts or helping companies reduce their energy bills, but I recently had the opportunity to visit the country of Peru on a family vacation and I felt it was interesting enough to add to our site.  Most of our vacations in the past several years have been the usual visits to the Florida attractions in Orlando, a week at Ft Myers Beach, or a few days visiting relatives in the northeast. About a year ago our neighbor Jorge, a native Peruvian, and his wife were considering taking a family

The Mountains around Machu Picchu Cusco Peru is an area of Peru that is an archaeological treasure trove. Cusco’s elevation is 11,200 above sea level, Machu Picchu is nearly 8,000ft above sea level.

trip to Peru to show their 2 teenage children some of the family heritage, the small beach town, Pisco, where Jorge grew up and the surrounding areas. Since our children are similar in ages to Jorge’s children, they spend a lot of time at each of the neighborhood houses and we started talking about the possibility of our family joining the neighbors on their trip to Peru. After some planning and coordinating, our trip plans started to take shape. Jorge contacted a childhood friend, Cesar, who still lives in Peru, and does planning for tour groups and vacationers visiting the sites in Peru. As time went on, two more neighborhood teen friends were added to our group in addition to 2 more relatives meeting up with us in Peru to bring our group total to 13 people (6 adults and 7 teenagers).

       I pulled out a small sample of the hundreds of photos that I took to give you a flavor of some of the interesting sites and beauty in Peru. Our 10 day trip gave us time to experience the native culture and meet many local Peruvians. I would encourage you to consider adding Peru to your future vacation plans. 

The mountains around Machu Picchu are a majestic site

While Machu Picchu is probably Peru’s best know archaeological site, Peru also is home to the Sechura Desert, part of the Amazon Rain Forest, and the Nasca Lines.  The potato originated in the region of southern Peru. Potatoes were first domesticated in Peru between 8000 BC and 5000 BC. In the Altiplano, potatoes provided the principal energy source for the Inca Empire, its predecessors, and its Spanish successor.Peru still farms over 2000 types of potatoes.   

 There are several large churches in Cusco, in addition to many small stores, shopping markets, hotels and restaurants. 

 A small restaurant that we stopped at in the Paracas reserve, allowed us to tour their kitchen area, they do not use many modern kitchen appliances or have modern equipment.

While we were in Peru, we visited the Tacama Winery, near the oasis city of Ica

 The Tacama Winery is near Ica, Peru. Tacama makes many types of wine in addition to a drink called Pisco, which is used to make “Pisco Sour”, the national drink. Many local restaurants offered us free Pisco Sour drinks to stop at their restaurants. The wine press above  was used in the late 1800′s. The press on the underside of the long horizontal log was slowly lowered (by the vertical wooden screws on the left),  to press the grapes contained in round wooden tubs.

  These three wheeled taxis called Tut Tuts are all over the area. Since most locals don’t own cars, the Tutus dart in and out of traffic carrying passangers to their destinations. We found fuel to be very expensive. The two Hyundai H1 vans we rented were diesel. 

Our evening of dune buggy rides and “Sand Surfing” in the Sechura desert

 On the last evening on our trip, we were in the desert doing sand boarding and dune buggy rides. After the sand boarding, we enjoyed a barbaque cookout in the desert at a small camp setup by the staff with the dune buggies. At 9:00pm in the darkness, the dune buggy drivers took us back to our vans, through the desert without their headlights on. Buffet Restaurant with outdoor seating in Peru

 We stopped at this buffet restaurant with outdoor seating. We had a chance to try some local Peruvian dishes. The weather was great, and it was a very enjoyable afternoon. 

 The Koricancha Temple in Cusco, is reported to have had the walls lined with gold, gold statues, and a huge golden sun disc. The outside terraces are said to have had life size gold and silver statues of plants and animals.  

Guinea Pig is a delicacy in Peru

 Guinea pig is considered a delicacy in Peru. While the taste was ok, there is not much there to eat, which is probably why it is a “delicacy” and not a meal. Potatoes are served with most meals in Peru. We also tried alpaca which tasted similar to beef. We all had a great opportunity to try many different types of food.  

This is a typical street in the Pisco/ Paracas area. The area near Paracas was the site of a 8.0 magnitude earth quake in August 2007. Many of the buildings still have significant damage

 In August 2007, Peru suffered a 8.0 magnitude earthquake which destroyed or seriously damaged more than 16,000 homes and businesses. The earthquake was centered near the towns of Paracas and Pisco, small beach towns. Even though it has been 4 years since the earthquake, much progress have been made but, many of the buildings still show signs significant damage. Building, electrical and plumbing inspections seem to be lax, but Peru seems to be recovering. 

The Pacific ocean meets the Sechura Desert in southern Peru

 The Sechura Desert actually comes up to the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the Paracas Reserve in southern Peru. Much of the coast line has very steep rocky cliffs

Our group of 13 neighbors and relatives standing in front of the “Candelabra” . The Candelabra on the northern face of the Paracas reserve, faces the Pacific Ocean and is 595′ high, large enough to be seen 12 miles into the Pacific Ocean. The age of Candelabra is unknown for sure, but experts put the age anywhere from 500 to 2000+ years old. Archaeologists have found pottery around the site dating back to around 200 B.C.  Some experts say that the Candelabra was a directional marker that points ancient visitors to the “Nasca Lines”, other suspect it may have been a lighthouse of sorts, to guide the local fisherman into a safe harbor.  

Back in the USA:

 Visiting another country can be exciting and great fun and takes some planning, exchanging currency, maybe solving a language barrier, etc, but it is always great to get home. Even though this is not my first trip out of the USA, I am thankful for our freedoms and all that we have in this country. Yes the USA has it’s share of problems, but they pale in comparison to some of the struggles and problems that are faced by other nations.
